We All Dream Alone

just wondering...
are buttonflys(flies?) still around?
velcro flys? or are those just on the hammer pants and in zz top songs?
i know for a long time all i had were the buttonflys (okay, and ONE velcro fly), but they've been phased out of my wardrobe, and i really have no recollection of when this happened.
i mean really, is there a worse fucking place on a man's clothes to put sharp metal teeth that are made to be clinched together?

"Oh man! How'd you get the beans above the frank?"

the ladies

i was mainly unimpressed. four of them were really good, the rest were all average.

vonzell solomon went first, and i didn't think it was all that great, until about halfway through the show when i started to realize that it wasn't really gonna get that much better. shes moving on.

aloha mischeaux(by the way, i'm not just making up these names, i swear!) was last, and she can blow, dawg!

carrie underwood has a twang, but in a good way. she could make it to the end.

nadia turner was my favorite. another rocker, she belted out her song and made the rest look sorta like chumps on star search. she'll be in the top six, no doubt.

it's really hard to figure out who'll get the boot this week, cause i think aside from the above, they were all stunningly average, no one really stood out, and no one really sucked hard.

celena rae was decent. she got better as the song went on.

sarah mather was okay. she looks a little like michelle pfeiffer(how the fuck do you spell that?) with dark hair, so i wouldn't mind if she stuck around for a few more weeks.

janay castine was nervous as hell and kind of shaky, but she's really young and has a good voice, so i hope she gets another shot.

i don't know how to feel about mikalah gordon. she can sing, but she sounds EXACTLY like fran drescher when she talks, and thats just not a good thing. however, she will land the title role when they make "The Nanny" movie in 10 years.

lindsey cardinale is just alright. deep voice, which is kinda cool.

jessica sierra wasn't good, but she has a decent voice and was better before. could have been nerves. randy will be upset if she gets booted. plus she has the best "most embarassing moment":
"When I was in fifth grade, I was reading a report out loud in front of the class. I dropped the paper, but when I bent over to pick it up, I let out the loudest fart of my life. Needless to say, I cleared out the entire class. (We took recess a little early that day)"

melinda lira. i thought she was terrible, but the judges went very easy on her. this makes me think that they know she can sing and just wanted to make sure she had another chance. i don't want her to have one, but i'll think she'll squeak by.

amanda avila wasn't good. she's out like ellen degeneres.

i don't think melinda will get voted off. she'd be my pick, but i think it's gonna be amanda and sarah.

i can't wait til they start whittling this down. i can't get any work done when i'm writing this shit all day!

my guilty pleasure
is back, and it's better. much better.

american idol upped the age limit. i'm not sure what it was before, maybe 24ish? now it's up to 28, and it really shows. wayyy more talent than ever before. they've cut it down to 12 guys and 12 girls, and the 12 guys went first last night. two will get cut on wednesday.

first impressions:

during the boring part(the past few weeks), where simon tells everyone they suck and fox lets bad comics do their schtick on a national stage, three of the guys really stood out for me, and they all made it to the top 12.

david brown is just a great singer. he wasn't great last night though, probably due to nerves. he's not getting cut anytime soon.

scott savol looks just like private pyle from full metal jacket, but can sing his ass off. again, not so great the first night, but i think he'll go far. people(simon) say he has an image problem. i say america doesn't care, look at clay and ruben. and even kelly and fantasia for that matter... none of them were the best looking. although they didnt look like schizophrenic serial killers either. but i ain't holding that against him.

constantine maroulis. finally, a real rocker on idol. like, he was in a band and stuff! and in rent! good to have a new flavor on idol, and like i said before, the age thing has a lot to do with it. there are more people who are confident and seasoned, and it makes it a lot harder to figure out who's going to make it and who's not. there just isn't as much suck this year. i thought he was great last night.

those three really stood out earlier, and i hope they make it far. the next guys blew me away last night.

bo bice was easily the best last night. i didn't notice too much of him during the last few shows, but goddamn it, last night he was the first guy on idol to actually rock the fucking thing. everytime they've tried to 'rock' before it just sounded cheesy, but last night this dude tore it up. another rocker just makes it that much better.

anwar robinson is this soft spoken music teacher who probably has the best voice out of all the guys. second best performance last night.

mario vazquez is another guy i didnt really notice earlier, but he was one of the best last night.

...and the rest

nikko smith is the artist formerly known as osbourne smith jr. ozzie smiths son! he's smooth.

judd harris was really good last night. but i dunno if he can stretch it for the long haul. seems like a one note kinda guy.

i would say one of the two getting booted will be from these three:

joseph murena, another guy who was good last night, but i don't see him getting very far.

anthony federov was weak last night. what is it with idol and effeminate blond guys with disabilities? last time it was the deaf guy jim. this time it's this guy, who had an emergency tracheotomoy when he was a baby and wasn't even supposed to speak above a whisper for the rest of his life.

travis tucker seems like a nice guy who can't stop smiling. we'll see if he stops on wednesday.

i think jospeh murena will be the one. for the first time though, everyone has a great voice. except:

jared yates. sorry dawg, you just didn't bring it. hope you packed up.

shit like this

...drives me crazy.

this is from salon today:

Gale Norton's Yellowstone snow job

This week, Interior Secretary Gale Norton took a 150-mile, three-day snowmobile trip through Yellowstone National Park. During the photo-op tour, she showed unqualified support for the noisy, exhaust-puffing machines.

The New York Times reported that she turned up her nose at the snow coach, a more environmentally friendly alternative to snowmobiles which has gained in popularity: "Norton gave only faint praise to the snowmobile's competition. Emerging from a short ride in a van-like snow coach, the mode of transport that is becoming an increasingly robust rival for snowmobile outfitters at the edges of the park, she said, 'This is a much more ordinary kind of experience,' adding, 'it's not as special as a snowmobile.'

"After an election in which President Bush's campaign reached out to snowmobile enthusiasts and in the midst of dueling legal challenges to two conflicting National Park Service decisions on whether to permit snowmobiles in the park, Norton's drawn-out photo opportunity underscored the similar interests of the multibillion-dollar outdoor recreation industry and the Bush administration's Interior Department."

While the Times notes that the bison that the secretary passed along the way "showed no discernible reaction," a former Yellowstone ranger who works for Bluewater Network in San Francisco, an environmental group that's suing the feds over the use of snowmobiles in the park, says the machines are contributing to bison mortality.

"Just because an animal is standing there doesn't mean it's not being impacted by the use," says Sean Smith, public lands director for Bluewater Network. Bison sometimes wander out of the park into Montana on trails that the park service grooms for snowmobile use. The fear of a disease that the bison can carry -- which can spread to cattle -- means that the state of Montana sends them to slaughter.

"They're killing these animals that belong to all of us," says Smith. And that doesn't just hurt the bison, he says; it has impacts on grizzlies and wolves, both of which eat them. In the spring, as the snow and ice melts, grizzlies feed on the defrosting carcasses of bison that have died during the winter. "It's an important food source that's being removed," says Smith.

Smith also marvels at the Interior Secretary's cheerleading for the recreational sporting industry.

"It's amazing to see how much effort the Department of the Interior is putting into promoting snowmobiling," he says. "That isn't their job. Their job is to protect and conserve our natural resources. The Park Service knows for a fact that snowmobiles and trail grooming damage the resource. They've studied it for 10 or 15 years, but they're going to allow it to continue anyway, and that's almost unprecedented in Park Service history."

"The science supports removing these machines," Smith adds. "The public wants it, the law requires it, and [Bush's interior department] is going to do the exact opposite."

sorry if you're a snowmobiling enthusiast; but even if you are, you don't NEED to ride them in a national park.
the bolded statements above by sean smith say all that really needs to be said.
